CFUW has joined over 40 organizations in expressing deep concern about the federal government’s proposed 80% cut to Women and Gender Equality Canada (WAGE) over the next three years.
This is not a routine budget adjustment—it is a devastating and disproportionate rollback that threatens to reverse decades of progress on gender equality in Canada.
WAGE (Women and Gender Equality) is the only federal department dedicated to advancing gender equality and women’s rights. It funds front-line organizations that:
- support survivors of gender-based violence
- promote women’s economic security
- strengthen 2SLGBTQ+ communities
- deliver education, outreach, and advocacy for lasting systemic change
The proposed cuts would:
- reduce services for people fleeing abuse
- weaken support for gender-diverse and 2SLGBTQ+ individuals
- force small, local organizations to lay off staff or shut down
- eliminate essential programs that communities across Canada rely on
These programs are not luxuries—they are lifelines. And at a time when gender-based violence is rising, misogyny is intensifying, and many organizations are already stretched to their limits, these cuts are not only harmful—they are dangerous.
If WAGE funding disappears, no other department will fill the gap. We cannot afford to abandon this work.
We urge the federal government to reverse these cuts and recommit to building a Canada where all people—regardless of gender—have access to safety, opportunity, and justice.
We call on our members, partners, and allies to contact their Members of Parliament and to make it clear: gender equality must remain a national priority.
