SUMMARY:CFUW Southport : A Floor Beneath Our Feet - Basic Income in an Age of Uncertainty with Dr.Evelyn Forget
DESCRIPTION:Register here : https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/oxPzwkXhQnCJjwgZ7TF2KgA Floor Beneath Our Feet: Basic Income in an Age of UncertaintyAcross Canada and around the world\, more people are struggling with housing costs\, food insecurity\, precarious work\, and economic uncertainty\, even as public compassion for those in need erodes. Economist and public policy scholar Evelyn Forget explores the sources of contemporary insecurity\, the limits of existing income-support programs\, and the potential of a basic income to provide a foundation for dignity and economic security. She addresses two persistent concerns: whether a basic income is affordable and whether it is politically achievable in the current climate. Drawing on research\, pilots\, experiments and history\, Evelyn Forget examines one of the most important\, and most misunderstood\, social policy debates of our time.\nBiographyEvelyn L. Forget is an Officer of the Order of Canada and Distinguished Professor at the University of Manitoba. Her research examines the health and social consequences of poverty and inequality\, and she is frequently called upon by governments\, First Nations\, and international organizations to advise on issues related to poverty\, inequality\, health\, and social well-being. She is the author of Basic Income for Canadians: From the COVID-19 Emergency to Financial Security for All and Radical Trust: Basic Income for Complicated Lives. Her latest book\, On Deservingness: The Systems and Stories That Sustain Inequality\, will be published in April 2027.
