Friday, May 9, 2025 (7:00 PM - 9:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Join us May 9th at 7pm (Mountain time) to hear Katie Morrison, CPAWS Southern Alberta's executive director, speak to us on the topic of coal mining and its impacts in Alberta, and what the impact is of the removal of the moratorium on coal mine development and exploration. CPAWS = Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (https://cpaws.org/

There are environmental impacts associated with mining coal along the Eastern Slopes in Alberta, from ecosystem health and water quality in the province to global climate change. In January a moratorium on coal mine development and exploration, that had been in place since early 2022, was removed. The moratorium was implemented in response to the large negative response to coal mining by the public and NGOs and was meant to be temporary until a new coal policy was created. However, with no new coal policy and the moratorium removed, the 1976 Coal Policy is in effect. To learn more about the impacts of this join us May 9th at 7pm (Mountain time).
