A Floor Beneath Our Feet: Basic Income in an Age of Uncertainty

Across Canada and around the world, more people are struggling with housing costs, food insecurity, precarious work, and economic uncertainty, even as public compassion for those in need erodes. Economist and public policy scholar Evelyn Forget explores the sources of contemporary insecurity, the limits of existing income-support programs, and the potential of a basic income to provide a foundation for dignity and economic security. She addresses two persistent concerns: whether a basic income is affordable and whether it is politically achievable in the current climate. Drawing on research, pilots, experiments and history, Evelyn Forget examines one of the most important, and most misunderstood, social policy debates of our time.
